New York sales tax rate lookup

Type a delivery address or ZIP code and get the rate that applies there. It runs entirely in your browser — nothing you type is sent anywhere.

or pick one

Rates are taken from Publication 718, the Department's jurisdiction and rate table, the same figures as our Rates page, and were last reviewed on the date shown there. ZIP boundaries come from the US Census Bureau's 2020 ZCTA-to-county file.

Where a ZIP code crosses a county line this shows every jurisdiction it touches, commonest first — the delivery address decides which one applies. Yonkers is the only city in the state whose rate differs from its county's, and it is flagged when Westchester comes up.

This resolves to a ZIP code, not to a parcel.

A ZIP code is a mail-delivery route, not a tax boundary, and the two do not always agree. Some ZIPs serve a single building or only PO Boxes and have no mapped area at all; for those this falls back to the surrounding postal area and tells you it has done so. For an answer tied to a specific street address — which is what you want if the rate is disputed, or if you are close to a county line — use the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance's own Jurisdiction/Rate Lookup by Address. This page is a fast first answer, not a substitute for it.

Which rate applies

New York stacks a 4% state rate, a local rate set by the county or city, and ⅛% (0.375%) inside the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District. The figures below are the combined totals.

New York is destination-based: the rate is set by where the goods are delivered or where possession passes to the buyer, not by where the seller sits. That is why this tool asks for the delivery address rather than yours.

What this does not tell you

It gives a rate. It does not decide whether what you are selling is taxable at all, whether an exemption certificate applies, or whether some other tax is due on top. Those depend on the goods and the buyer, and the pages on this site set out the rules; nothing here is tax advice.

We are not CPAs or tax professionals

Nobody who publishes this site is a certified public accountant, an enrolled agent, a tax attorney or a tax preparer, and this is not a professional service. What this page does is apply a published government rate table to a ZIP code. That is arithmetic, not advice.

It cannot tell you whether what you are selling is taxable at all, whether an exemption certificate applies, whether the sale is sourced where you think it is, or what belongs on a return. Those turn on the goods, the buyer and the circumstances, and getting them wrong costs more than the rate does. Where the answer matters, check it against the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance or ask a qualified professional — and nothing here creates any professional relationship between you and us.
