Between Thanksgiving and the end of February, a New York seller can face three or four filing dates depending on the filing frequency the Department has assigned. This is a calendar of those dates, followed by a short weekly records routine that keeps each return from turning into a scramble. For the full December 21 walk-through, see our December 21 filing checklist.

The rule that sets every date

The Department's calendar says that if a return's due date falls on a Saturday, Sunday or legal holiday, it is due the next business day. Your frequency is assigned by the Department, not chosen, so use the schedule on your own account. The forms are ST-100 (quarterly), ST-809 and ST-810 (part-quarterly, or monthly) and ST-101 (annual).

Dates on the Department's 2026 calendar

  • Friday, November 20, 2026: sales tax returns due for monthly filers (the October period).
  • Monday, December 21, 2026: returns due for quarterly filers (September through November) and for monthly filers. The 20th is a Sunday, which is why it moves.

Dates for early 2027

The Department's 2027 calendar was not available when this was written, so these are calculated from the 20th of the month after a period ends, plus the weekend rule above. Confirm each one on tax.ny.gov before you rely on it.

  • Wednesday, January 20, 2027: monthly filers, December 2026 period.
  • Monday, February 22, 2027: monthly filers, January 2027 period. February 20 is a Saturday.
  • Monday, March 22, 2027: the December-through-February quarter for quarterly filers, the quarterly return for monthly filers, and the annual return for the sales tax year that ends in February. March 20 is a Saturday.

Our 2027 due dates page lists the full year, and the due date calculator works out your own next deadline. PrompTax vendors follow separate electronic funds transfer rules, which the Department's calendar directs you to its PrompTax page for.

What you are required to do

File by the due date and pay what the return shows. Most vendors must file using Web File: the Department says you must if you do not use a tax preparer, use a computer to prepare your forms, and have broadband internet access. You can schedule a payment in advance as long as you are filing before the due date. If you owe no tax for a period, the Department has a separate guide on filing a no-tax-due return, so do not assume nothing is required. Keep your records for the minimum three years from the return's due date, or the filing date if later, per TB-ST-770. Everything below is optional help with staying organized.

A weekly records routine for the holiday stretch

Holiday volume makes the books grow quickly. Fifteen minutes on a fixed day is easier than a weekend in the week of the deadline.

  1. Same day each week: export or copy the week's sales and note which were taxable, which were exempt and which were delivered outside your location.
  2. File the paper: put new exemption certificates with the customer's file and note the sale each covers.
  3. Update a running total of taxable sales for the quarter, so there are no surprises when the return is prepared.
  4. Check the date of the next return and mark your own target a few days earlier than the due date.
  5. Before the due date: file, pay, save the confirmation, and put a copy in the folder for that period.

Optional tools for the routine

A calendar you can see helps more than a reminder you can swipe away. A dry-erase monthly wall calendar is easy to mark with both the due date and your own earlier target. A weekly planner with monthly tabs suits the fifteen-minute weekly slot. For paper receipts, a receipt organizer and a multi-pocket accordion folder can hold one pocket per period. When looking, consider size and whether the planner has dated pages that start when you need them; that matters more than any brand.

Our records and bookkeeping supplies page lists the same kinds of items. This is general information, not tax advice. Dates and rules change, so confirm yours with the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance.
